Skiing without the hustle and bustle and at a fair price. The charming Rabenkopf lift in Oberau still offers something like this. Tobogganing and ice skating are also possible here.

Oberau: Relaxed winter sports

Winter sports facilities in Oberau at a glance:

  • Skiing and snowboarding, especially for ski and snowboard beginners
  • Tobogganing
  • hiking
  • cross-country skiing
  • Snowshoeing
  • Ice skating

You don't need much for a perfect day of winter sports: a small slope, a lift, snow and your skis or snowboard on your feet. This is exactly what is on offer at the Rabenkopf lift in the small village of Oberau, not far from Garmisch. A rope lift for the little ones (or older ones) who are trying out their first turns on skis or a snowboard. The additional T-bar lift, on the other hand, opens up a 500 metre long descent and allows for the first fast descents. If there is enough snowfall, cross-country skiers will also get their money's worth, as a circular trail is groomed near the valley station.

If there is enough snowfall, cross-country skiers will also get their money's worth, as a circular trail is then groomed near the valley station. The approx. 800 metre long loop is particularly suitable for beginners and those who want to slowly prepare for winter or make their first attempts on skating skis. It is specially prepared for skaters and is therefore not suitable for classic cross-country skiers.

Relaxed winter day on the Rabenkopf

The Rabenkopf is a cosy place! A small kiosk provides winter sports enthusiasts with snacks and drinks. There is also a toboggan run and, as a very special highlight, you can do your laps on the large natural ice rink free of charge during regular opening hours. On Fridays, the ice rink can even be used at night during disco evenings.

An additional argument, especially for families, is the favourable price for using the ski lift: there are all-day, half-day, season and points tickets for children and adults. Children under the age of six ski free of charge. A snowmaking system also ensures a reliable snow cover on the piste. Here you can find out whether the ski lift is in operation.

Away from the slopes and ice rink, Oberau offers wonderful winter hiking tours: for a relaxed snowshoe hike, we recommend the trail along the Loisach, which runs 4.6 kilometres from Oberau to Farchant.

Culinary delights at the Oberauer Alm

If you are feeling a little peckish at the end of the day, a detour to the Oberauer Alm is a good idea. Here you can relax and reflect on your experiences while savouring home-style cooking.

Outdoor experiences in Oberau outside the winter season

And even though the ski lift usually closes in mid-March, a trip to Oberau in the middle of the Loisach Valley is still worthwhile: here you will find the best tips for mountain biking, hiking and climbing tours in Zugspitzland.

How to get there

Take the train to Oberau station. From the station square, take the through road into Schmiedeweg until the main road branches off to the left. Walk along this road until you come to Ettaler Straße, where you turn right and walk along it for about 450 metres until Alte Ettaler Straße branches off to your left. Continue along this street until you see the ice rink and ski lift on your left. The walk takes a good 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can also take the 9606 bus from the "Bahnhof" station to the "Untermberg" station and from here walk along Alte Ettaler Straße until you see the ice rink and ski lift on the left-hand side.
